One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from homeowners is, “If my roof isn’t leaking, it must be okay.”
I wish that were true.

Missing Shingles Are the Obvious One…
If you can see pieces of shingles lying in your yard, congratulations—you’ve already found the first clue.
But here’s what many homeowners don’t realize…
Wind doesn’t always rip shingles completely off.
Sometimes it simply lifts them enough to break the seal. They settle back down looking almost normal, but now every heavy rain has an invitation underneath them. That’s when leaks start playing hide-and-seek inside your home.
Check Your Gutters (They’re Trying to Tell You Something)
Ever notice what looks like coarse black sand collecting in your gutters?
Those are shingle granules.
They’re basically sunscreen for your roof. Once enough of them wash away, your shingles begin aging much faster under Tennessee’s blazing summer sun.
A little granule loss is normal.
A lot? That’s your roof waving a little white flag.
Your Ceiling Might Rat Out Your Roof
Most roof damage doesn’t introduce itself outside.
It shows up inside.
Water stains on the ceiling.

Paint bubbling.

We all love mature shade trees…
Until one decides your roof looks like a good place to land.
Even smaller branches can scrape granules off shingles or damage flashing. Larger limbs can puncture the roof entirely.
After every storm, take a quick walk around your home. If you see branches on the roof—even small ones—it’s worth having everything checked.
Flashing: The Unsung Hero of Your Roof
Nobody gets excited about flashing.
It’s not flashy. (Yes, I went there.)
But it’s one of the most important parts of your roofing system.
Flashing protects the areas around chimneys, pipe boots, skylights, and roof valleys. If strong winds bend it or loosen it, water suddenly has an express lane into your home.
Many roof leaks we repair aren’t because shingles failed.
They’re because flashing did.
Here’s My Best Advice
Please don’t climb onto your roof.
Seriously.
I’ve seen enough emergency room stories to know that’s not a DIY project.
Instead, grab a pair of binoculars, walk around your property, and look for anything that seems different after a storm.
