Fall Is Coming, Winter Is Behind It — Is Your Roof Ready, Knoxville?

Fall in Knoxville has a way of sneaking up on us.

One minute it’s 92 degrees, the next minute somebody is drinking pumpkin coffee, buying mums, and arguing over whether it’s too early to turn the heat on.

And while everybody is thinking about football, bonfires, and putting up fall decorations, your roof is sitting up there quietly wondering if anybody plans on checking on it before winter shows up.

At Tony’s Roofs, we see the same thing every year. Homeowners wait until the cold weather hits, then suddenly discover a leak, missing shingles, clogged gutters, damaged flashing, or some other surprise nobody wanted for Christmas.

So before East Tennessee trades humidity for freezing mornings, here are a few things I recommend checking.

Start With the Shingles

Your shingles are your roof’s first line of defense.

After a long Knoxville summer full of heat, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and wind, shingles can become loose, cracked, lifted, or damaged.

Sometimes the problem is obvious.

Sometimes it’s one little shingle sitting crooked that eventually turns into water dripping into your attic.

That’s why fall is such a good time for an inspection.

You want to catch the small problem while it’s still a small problem.

Because roofing issues are a lot like toddlers.

Ignore them long enough and they will absolutely become louder and more expensive.

Clean Those Gutters

Nobody gets excited about gutter cleaning.

I understand.

But gutters play a huge role in protecting your roof, siding, fascia, foundation, and landscaping.

When gutters are packed with leaves, pine needles, and whatever else East Tennessee trees decide to donate, water can back up along the roofline.

That moisture can damage fascia boards, roof decking, and even work its way under shingles.

Then winter comes.

Temperatures drop.

Water freezes.

And suddenly that harmless pile of leaves has become a much bigger roofing problem.

Your gutters need to move water away from your home, not create their own backyard swimming pool.

Check Flashing, Pipe Boots, and Roof Penetrations

Some of the most common leaks we find aren’t caused by giant holes in the roof.

They come from small areas around chimneys, vents, pipe boots, skylights, and flashing.

Rubber pipe boots can crack.

Sealants can fail.

Flashing can loosen.

And water has an impressive ability to find the tiniest opening available.

If there is one quarter-inch gap somewhere on your roof, rainwater will find it like it has GPS.

Don’t Forget the Attic

Your attic can tell you a lot about your roof.

Look for water stains, damp insulation, dark spots, mold, or daylight coming through areas where daylight definitely should not be coming through.

Proper attic ventilation is also important year-round.

Good ventilation helps control heat and moisture, which can extend the life of your roofing system and help prevent condensation problems during colder months.

Winter Is Not the Time to Discover Roof Problems

A roof problem in October is inconvenient.

A roof problem in January, when it’s freezing outside and rain is dripping into your living room, is a whole different experience.

Nobody wants to be standing in the kitchen with a bucket saying, “Well, I guess we should’ve had that checked.”

Fall gives Knoxville homeowners a great window to prepare.

The weather is cooler.

The worst of summer is behind us.

And there is still time to repair minor issues before winter weather starts putting more stress on your roof.
